Upland adventures in Maryland
Indian Springs WMA, is a 6,400 acre tract with a year around DNR dog training section and a field trial section. Pheasants are released one time per year and quail are around from the field trials. I've taken woodcock, rabbits, pheasants and quail here. If you are training your dog make sure you have your hunting license and the dog training permit ($5.00 extra) from the Maryland Compass website or a retailer. Here's the link to the website. One of my favorite spots!
My first pheasant hunt was at Mt Nebo. I entered the Maryland DNR new hunter pheasant lottery and asked for Mt Nebo as my first choice of spots. I did this because I was hoping to have Ruffed Grouse, Woodcock, rabbit and pheasants all in one hunt. And, of the 1,854 acres, 10% is a wetland bog/lake so I was also prepared to take some ducks if I could jump shoot them.
I was walking into the Aelred Geis Memorial Woodcock area... I walked up an embankment next to a grove of young alders. I saw a fla
The Northeast Kingdom is Prime Ruffed Grouse Territory
If one place moves my soul, it's the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. It's wild, rugged and full of Ruffed Grouse. Vermont has over 4,000 miles of snowmobile trails and the grouse love the edge cover. It's easy walking and they flush at about 4 to 5 an hour. Of course, you only actually see about 30% of them! The sound is thrilling and your heart will be pounding!
Quimby Country is the oldest continuously operating hunting and fishing lodge in Vermont. That obviously speaks to the great hunting and fishing that surrounds this treasure. All I can suggest is that you try it out for yourself. The cast-n-blast weekend is where I would suggest you plan your grouse hunt! Give Gene or Lilly a call and tell them Ted sent you. And, you can tell me around the camp fire about how much you love the place! See you in October.
Stocked Pheasants
2022 was my first season checking out the stocked pheasant hunts in MA. I tried 3 WMAs that were located near very diversely populated areas. The Eugene D. Moran WMA is in western part of te state located just north of the town of Windsor. Looking at the aerial maps, the property is well laid out to hold pheasants in grassy sections. What I found was that there were so many hunters on the days the pheasants were released, it was like going to a Black Friday sale. All the birds were taken within
Located in the town of Montague, this WMA has dozens of flat, well managed areas of diverse biodensity. MA DNR was conducting a prescribed burn while I hunted one morning which made me feel like the areas were managed with current best practices. I parked next to 3 or 4 vehicles every day but only ran into someone hunting once while in the fields. The birds were tough to find! In two days (3-4 hrs ea), I only found two hens.

Awesome Stocked Pheasant Program!
Pennsylvania offers a very strong stocking program. Their website shares great historical and current information to help you decide where you want to put your time in. That being said, I experienced some itiotic behavior from hunters who were determined to shoot a pheasant regardless if it was sitting on the ground 20' in front of them. Kind of looked like the foaming at the mouth crew if you get my point. Here's the website to start your research. Scroll down to the map of the state that has t
Grouse!
Michigan has a very strong grouse management program called GEMS. Grouse Enhanced Management Sites. GEMS sites are aggresivly managed and while they get hunted hard sometimes, the cover is thick in places and I imagine there are plenty of hunters who don't want to get into massive adlder stands with slash to crawl over. I was there on opening day in 2022. It was 92 degrees and the birds weren't flying, the dog was over heating and my buddy and I were pretty toasted too. We flushed a covey of 6 b
